DJ Kemit's FELA KUTI mix
October 10, 2009 07:15 AM PDT
ABOUT THE EVENT: FELABRATION – Annual Tribute to FELA KUTI Presented by Spread Love, Jump N Funk, Hot Ice
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009
It is rare that an artist erupts onto the musical landscape, defines a genre, shakes the world to its core and departs too soon leaving a legacy that can fill the night sky. Jazz had John Coltrane. Rock had Jimi Hendrix. Afrobeat had Fela Kuti and on SATURDAY, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24th - SPREAD LOVE, JUMP N FUNK, HOT ICE, 595 NORTH EVENT VENUE, GIANT STEP and KNITTING FACTORY RECORDS pay homage to the life of Nigeria’s warrior poet and the Godfather of Global Soul with FELABRATION! FELABRATION takes its audience through an interactive journey of the life of Africa’s most prolific musical pioneer: first, with a documentary, "Music is the Weapon," live art, traditional African body/pace painting, highlights of the FELA! Broadway Musical, and a special performance by one of Fela’s collaborative partners, ROY AYERS!! Leading the evening’s tribute are DJ KEMIT, minister of sound for SPREAD LOVE, and RICH MEDINA, the global ambassador of Jump N Funk. DJ AUSAR, host of WRFG’s Kalakuta Show, will open the night with a musical libation befitting a king. Then MAUSIKI SCALES & COMMON GROUND COLLECTIVE will provide the live musical foundation for ROY AYERS and his magical vibes. DJ KEMIT and RICH MEDINA will close the night with a record-for-record mash up of Afrobeat, Soul, Funk and House- reminiscent Fela’s legendary collaborations with JAMES BROWN, ROY AYERS, and GINGER BAKER, just to name a few. Guests will receive parting gifts (commemorative FELABRATION posters) courtesy of Giant Step and Knitting Factory Records. Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria. In 1961 he formed Koola Lobitos in London, two years later, he created “Afrobeat”, which was inspired by James Brown, the Yoruba culture, high life and jazz. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine. His music served as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised, critiquing the military government and made Fela not only a pop star but a political figure as well. People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions. One million people attended his funeral in Nigeria. FELABRATION comes only once a year. Don’t miss the opportunity to celebrate the life and work of an extraordinary man. About KemitDJ KEMIT Cure for the common sound. Veteran American DJ and Grammy Award nominated producer, Kevin Hyman AKA DJ Kemit has been intertwined within beats, notes, and rhythms of music since 1981. Though heavily influenced by the electronic sounds of ‘Italian Disco’ and ‘House’ music that infiltrated the airwaves of WBMX’s Hot Mix Five in Chicago during the early 1980’s, it is the harmonies, multi-layered melodies, hi hats and Polyrhythmatic tempos of jazz music that became the foundation of this Milwaukee native’s sound. Over the last two decades his music has landed him in the company of music industries finest and his skills as a musician elevate him as one of the most respected turntablists based in the US. “I love introducing new sounds to people that may have never heard them. I don’t have a choice. I wake up I hear music. I sleep I hear music. Music is my life.” What began in the 1970’s with a boom box, cassette tape, and two mis-matched belt drive turntables has evolved into a global brand. DJ Kemit’s music has taken him around the world and back from his early days living in the “Chocolate City” Washington DC to encapsulating sets with ‘The Chronicle’ at Atlanta’s legendary Ying Yang Café to DJ booths in Shibuya, Tokyo. His production credits include popular cuts like India Arie’s “I am Not My Hair (remix)”, Arrested Development’s “Shell”, and Laurnea‘s “Sun Don’t Rain”. More than a record-spinning DJ, he’s a musician that understands composition, scales, and drum rudiments. Since 4th grade he’s been fascinated with music. He understands the history of music and the industry’s most respected colleagues are in awe of his creative skills and talents. His ability to connect sounds thru a mixer and foot petals allows for the transformation of sound thru echoes, delays, loops, shifting and pitching. Cutting records on top of exported riffs and hi hats allow him to become not just a DJ, but an additional layer of the band. Known for a style of DJing that encompasses the entire spectrum of music, he’s able to painstakingly interject of a half-century‘s worth of rare, hard to find soul grooves, jazz, nostalgic pop, Latin afrobeats, disco, parliament funk, deep house, hip-hop, drum-n-bass, roots music, country western, and even rock & roll classics, without missing a beat. Enveloped in spirituality, his musical capacity is limitless; his passion for music is measureless; his ultimate mission achieved every time: make ‘em dance. Musically innovative, Kemit has DJ’d private sets for Prince, Janet Jackson, Steve Harvey, Jermaine Dupri and Jane Fonda and has upcoming projects with Carl McIntosh of Loose Ends (UK), Julie Dexter, Anthony David and Algebra Blessett. Currently he is working on two collaborative production efforts: KemeticJust featuring vocalist, guitarist, DJ, producer Just One and AlKemit , the second production project featuring a ten-song “future release” performed by Chicago-born powerhouse Alex Lattimore.
