About Nick Ashford Though the name Nick Ashford might not immediately ring a bell, the man's music most certainly will. Ashford, who, with his wife Valerie Simpson, was one half of the songwriting duo and pop/R&B/Soul group Ashford & Simpson, passed away Monday after a battle with throat cancer. In his 70 years, he and his wife penned some of the biggest, most pervasive hits of all time. After "Let's Go Get Stoned," their 1966 tune for Ray Charles, became a number one R&B hit, Ashford & Simpson quickly established themselves as songwriting royalty and joined the Motown Staff. They wrote a number of enormous songs for stars like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and Chaka Khan, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "You're All I Need To Get By" and "I'm Every Woman." An established musician, Ashford recorded percussion for dozens of Motown sessions, including those that produced Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On." Ashford & Simpson even had a hit of their own in 1984 with "Solid" (you know, as a rock). The duo was also credited on Amy Winehouse's track "Tears Dry On Their Own," which borrowed heavily from "Ain't No Mountain." Ashford's love for music is apparent, but he and Simpson's love for each other was what impressed their peers most. "The thing is they were married and working together, that was what was special about them. Everybody admired that," Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire told the Associated Press. Ashford is survived by Simpson, their two children, and his music.
And its only fitting that we honor Nick Ashord as part of the Paradise Garage tribute edition of Spread Love, as soooo many of Nick and Natalie's songs were classics at the legendary club ~ like this classic from Larry levan's LIVE AT THE PARADISE GARAGE album: Bourgie Bourgie! We're dedicating this Spread Love affair to Nick Ahford by celebrating love. About PARADISE GARAGE The most legendary club of club culture history... Opening in February 1978 and closing down in the fall of 1987, Paradise Garage is quite possibly the most revered of all of the great Dance clubs. Strongly influenced by David Mancuso's stellar sound system and familial atmosphere at The Loft, Paradise Garage became known for industry-defining sound and a congenial, loving environment serving as respite from the dangers and concerns of the streets of New York City. DJ Larry Levan presided over the Garage (as it was lovingly known) and inspired a reverence from club audiences unsurpassed in the history of Dance music. Paradise Garage became known musically for preserving the spirit and ambience of classic Disco while moving resolutely forward in musical style and innovation. The Dance music genre Garage is a lasting tribute to the club's importance to Dance music history. Throughout its history Paradise Garage had only one resident DJ, Larry Levan, widely revered as one of the most talented of all Dance DJs. A veteran of the Gallery, Continental Baths, and Reade St. (Paradise Garage's immediate precursor), Levan had strong connections with the New York Disco community. Larry Levan's musical palette at Paradise Garage was one of the most diverse ever in a Dance venue. He would incorporate elements of Rock, Disco, Jazz, R&B, Latin and more if it seemed to fit the mood of the moment. While nearly anything might be heard on the dancefloor, a more specific style began to emerge as a predominant sound. Ultimately known as Garage, this style was true to the sound and feel of Disco while adding technological elements that successfully brought the music forward. Levan's intimate connection with the record label West End Records, run by Michael Brody's life partner Mel Cheren, insured success for such West End classics as Karen Young's Hot Shot, The Peech Boys' Don't Make Me Wait, and Taana Gardner's Heartbeat. Part legend and part reality, Paradise Garage is certain to live on. And were elated to honor Larray Levan as one of the major inspirations for Spread Love. Songs In the Key of STEVIE!! SPECIAL GUEST PHIFE OF A TRIBE CALLED QUEST Since his emergence with hip hop legends A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, PHIFE DAWG influenced a generation of inspiring emcees with his succinct metaphor infused rhymes. As a member of A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, PHIFE DAWG achieved what few MCs could ever dream of by gathering three platinum and two gold records, playing in sold out concerts at the world's largest arenas and inspiring a generation of emcees to come. Many performers would be content with having achieved a fraction of what PHIFE DAWG has accomplished as an artist. However, true to his nature, PHIFE continues to seek more and reach out to loftier goals. When asked what lay before him he only invisions the mountains. As a solo artist he wants to leave people screaming "dammmnnn,...shorty has mad skills." A TRIBE CALLED QUEST is famous for their use of sample material on their albums - especiall Jazz. In fact, A TRIBE CALLED QUEST can be credited for introducing an entire generation to rare and legendary Jazz records through thier eclectic use of samples. ...Deejay Sets By... DJ KEMIT Voted Atlanta's favorite Deejay by Creative Loafing readers, DJ KEMIT was once a member of the Grammy award winning group Arrested Development. KEMIT is known internationally for his work with production partner (Justin Chapman aka Just One) as one half of KemeticJust. KemeticJust has released music on labels including King Street, Nite Grooves, Yoruba Records, Giant Step, Diaspora Recordings, Wave Music, Bombay Records & Play Records. KemeticJust released dozens of singles abroad and nationally. A full length Lp was released on Life Line (Japan) and Pooled Recordings (Germany) in 2004. As a Grammy nominated producer for his work on AD’s second Lp and various remixes state side & internationally he now looks forward to making a monumental difference in the shape and promotion of real music across the globe. KEMIT's diversity as a songwriter and producer is evidenced by his work with CARL MCINTOSH OF LOOSE ENDS, FRANK MCCOMB, N'DAMBI, and ANTHONY DAVID's "4evermore", which is currently ranked in Billboard UAC Top 5. KEMIT currently holds down seven residencies in Atlanta. His musical delivery is drawn from garage classics, hip hop anthems to deep house and reggae. KEMIT is the musical genius behind SPREAD LOVE and celebratingh is birthday each year is the least we can do to express our appreciation for all the great moments and music he's share with us! JAMAL AHMAD When it comes to soul — and funk and jazz and everything in between — Ahmad's the authority. Between his weekly WCLK-FM show "S.O.U.L." (Sounds of Universal Love) — which pumped a steady diet of UK soul, drum and bass and acid jazz from 1995 to 2005 — to his involvement as co-founder of defunct local indie label Groovement Collective (which helped spawn the likes of India.Arie, Donnie and Anthony David), Ahmad is a large part of the reason why Atlanta's Jazz and Soul scene sets the tone for the world stage. Since taking over the 2 p.m.-6 p..m. weekday slot on WCLK/91.9, he's become the city's favorite drive-time radio DJ — as recognized by CL in 2008 and AJC in 2009. ...and Live Music by... DARRYL REEVES QUINTET (Robert Glasper Experiment, Janelle Monae, and b.o.b)
Darryl studied with jazz greats with Terence Blanchard, Ed Peterson, Harold Batiste and Steve Masakowski. In New Orleans, he developed a reputation as a fierce alto saxophonist. He has been spotted performing alongside several great jazz musicians such as Wessell Anderson, Jason Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Roland Guerin, Jesse Davis, Nicholas Payton, Henry Butler, Russell Gunn, Rodney Whitaker, Donald Harrison and Roy Hargrove. In 2004, Darryl Reeves released a CD titled "Diary of a Bandstand" featuring Russell Gunn, Quamon Fowler, Robert Glasper, Rodney Jordan, Edwin Livingston, and Lumark Gulley. DASHILL SMITH
Dashill Smith, aka "Dash," is the “Freestyle Battle-Rhyme Juggarnaut/Music historian/ Jazz Trumpet Improvisation specialist of the group” - traits that are equally apparent in his work with his Jazz Improv ensemble, the Inertia Trio. Dashill’s talent has earned him appearances and/or studio dates with of a variety of artists including, Russell Gunn, Kebbi Williams, Mausiki Scales, Anton Harris, Venuseven and others. Definitely a major contributor to the evolutionary development of modern music. SPREAD LOVE - 6 YEARS STRONG! Back in 2006, the first official SPREAD LOVE was a birthday celebration for DJ KEMIT!!! It felt like the entire city squeezed into The Royal that night!! So the following year SPREAD LOVE moved to SUGARHILL and we still didn't have enough space to hold the crowd, the beautiful energy and incredible mix of music - everything from Soul Classics, to Latin Funk, to Afrobeat and Soulful House! When SPREAD LOVE became a monthly event, we made our way to East Atlanta and held it down at CENCI. Since then we've grown at 595 North for several years, and you've been there with us every step of the way! As we look ahead to another season of great events, we hope you'll continue to show your LOVE for GREAT SOULFUL MUSIC from all over the globe! Go where the music takes you! Spread Love, ya'll!! About KemitDJ KEMIT Cure for the common sound. Veteran American DJ and Grammy Award nominated producer, Kevin Hyman AKA DJ Kemit has been intertwined within beats, notes, and rhythms of music since 1981. Though heavily influenced by the electronic sounds of ‘Italian Disco’ and ‘House’ music that infiltrated the airwaves of WBMX’s Hot Mix Five in Chicago during the early 1980’s, it is the harmonies, multi-layered melodies, hi hats and Polyrhythmatic tempos of jazz music that became the foundation of this Milwaukee native’s sound. Over the last two decades his music has landed him in the company of music industries finest and his skills as a musician elevate him as one of the most respected turntablists based in the US. “I love introducing new sounds to people that may have never heard them. I don’t have a choice. I wake up I hear music. I sleep I hear music. Music is my life.” What began in the 1970’s with a boom box, cassette tape, and two mis-matched belt drive turntables has evolved into a global brand. DJ Kemit’s music has taken him around the world and back from his early days living in the “Chocolate City” Washington DC to encapsulating sets with ‘The Chronicle’ at Atlanta’s legendary Ying Yang Café to DJ booths in Shibuya, Tokyo. His production credits include popular cuts like India Arie’s “I am Not My Hair (remix)”, Arrested Development’s “Shell”, and Laurnea‘s “Sun Don’t Rain”. More than a record-spinning DJ, he’s a musician that understands composition, scales, and drum rudiments. Since 4th grade he’s been fascinated with music. He understands the history of music and the industry’s most respected colleagues are in awe of his creative skills and talents. His ability to connect sounds thru a mixer and foot petals allows for the transformation of sound thru echoes, delays, loops, shifting and pitching. Cutting records on top of exported riffs and hi hats allow him to become not just a DJ, but an additional layer of the band. Known for a style of DJing that encompasses the entire spectrum of music, he’s able to painstakingly interject of a half-century‘s worth of rare, hard to find soul grooves, jazz, nostalgic pop, Latin afrobeats, disco, parliament funk, deep house, hip-hop, drum-n-bass, roots music, country western, and even rock & roll classics, without missing a beat. Enveloped in spirituality, his musical capacity is limitless; his passion for music is measureless; his ultimate mission achieved every time: make ‘em dance.
